Day 1: Join our coach this morning as we travel to the Lake District and arrive at our hotel in the Shap Fells mid-afternoon.
Day 2: We enjoy a lovely day in the Lakes. First we travel to Haverthwaite railway station and board a train (usually steam, sometimes diesel) for a short journey through the beautiful scenery of the Leven Valley to Lakeside. After a short time in Lakeside we board a boat for a 40 minute cruise on stunning Lake Windermere - as we sail to Bowness. Free time in Bowness for lunch. We finish our day out at the award-winning Lakeland Motor museum in its new, purpose-built venue near Newby Bridge. There’s a fantastic array of cars of every kind plus the Campbell Bluebird exhibition.
Day 3: Today we have a circular tour around the centre of the Lake District National Park passing Rydal Water, Grasmere Lake, Esthwaite Waters and Coniston Water along the way and stopping at some of the well-known towns including Grasmere, Ambleside, Hawkeshead and Coniston. Returning to our hotel later this afternoon.
Day 4: A trip into the nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park. We travel first to Carnforth for a short stop at the painstakingly restored Carnforth train station - the setting for the famous 1946 film ‘Brief Encounter’ - check out the station buffet - restored to the original 1940’s style. We continue on to Settle and board a train on the famous Settle to Carlisle line. This journey, arguably the best train trip in England meanders through Pennine moorland scenery and over spectacular viaducts. We leave the train at the pretty market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland and rejoin the coach and travel back to our hotel through the scenic Vale of Lune.
Day 5: After a last, hearty ‘Cumbrian’ breakfast - it’s time to go home, unfortunately!
