Bantry Bay (N)
Bantry Bay (N)
8 Days- BAN3

Day 1: We can’t make it all the way to Bantry in one day, so we stay overnight in north Wales – convenient for the ferry next morning.

Day 2: En route to Holyhead Ferry Terminal for the morning sailing to Dublin. We arrive in Dublin and then we head south-west to the Westlodge Hotel this afternoon where we stay for 5 nights.

Day 3: A wonderful day of sightseeing and discovery.

We start by making a short scenic trip from Bantry across the sweep of the Bay to the village of Glengarriff. From here you board the Ferry at Blue Pool to Garnish Island.

Ireland is rightly proud of the ‘Garden Isle’ of Garnish or Ilnacullin as it is also known. It’s famous the world over with horticulturists and lovers of trees, shrubs and plants as an island garden of rare beauty. Our visit today includes entrance to the truly beautiful gardens created some 70 years ago.

This afternoon we cross the fantastically scenic Beara Peninsula to the town of Kenmare - an historic and designated heritage town with a lot to offer and a great choice of places to have lunch if you wish.

Day 4: Today we have trip to the south coast of County Cork. Our first stop is the town of Skibbereen. This whole area suffered terribly in the Potato famine of the 1840’s when one million Irish folk died. This harrowing story is told in a fascinating way in the excellent Heritage Centre (admission charge) alternatively, just take a stroll around this pretty, very ‘Irish’ town and enjoy the congenial atmosphere.

After a time in Skibbereen we head down to the coastal village of Baltimore which is one of the most south-westerly points of Ireland. This is a charming place to spend an hour or two and we’ve booked a cream tea for our coach group in one of the local tea rooms.

Day 5: Today is free for you to explore the town of Bantry at your own pace. The hotel is outside the town, so it would take you about 20 minutes to walk in or about 7 Euros in a Taxi. The town centre is very compact and has a wide variety of shops, bars, coffee shops, a tourist office and a good museum.

A lovely thing to do is take a ferry from Bantry Pier to Whiddy Island (takes about 15 minutes). It’s a haven of peace and tranquillity.

Day 6: We visit the renowned Bantry House and Gardens - a stately home overlooking Bantry Bay housing an important private collection of furniture and objects of art. It has been home to the White family since 1739 and was open to the public in 1946.

Day 7: Depart Bantry for Dublin where you can enjoy a few hours free time before we go on to our hotel on the outskirts of the city and so convenient for the early ferry from Dublin tomorrow back to Holyhead.

Day 8; Arrive Holyhead around 11;00hrs and continue homeward.
