4 Days- TOR37

A delightful break on the ‘English Riviera’ - visiting the picture-postcard towns of Looe and Polperro and a scenic rail journey….

Day 1: You’ll arrive at your hotel this afternoon with time to settle-in and freshen-up before dinner this evening.

Day 2: A full day out today as we head west – leaving Devon behind as we cross the River Tamar into Cornwall and visit two beautiful coastal villages.

Polperro, Sheltered from the ravages of time and tide in its cliff ravine, it's an enchanting jumble of cottages, each one unmistakably the work of a Cornish fisherman. Wending your way through the traffic-free streets to the small harbour, you're treading the paths where barrows of fish were once carted and, under cover of night, brandy casks and tobacco bales were carried into their hideouts. Make no mistake, this peaceful fishing cove, mellow Polperro, was once a thriving centre for the area's smuggling.

Looe is situated on both sides of the River Looe. In medieval times East Looe and West Looe were separate towns. They are joined by a seven arched bridge, built in 1853. This replaced a much earlier bridge from the 15th century and there are still buildings of this period in the town. One of Looe’s oldest buildings is the Old Guildhall in East Looe. It dates back to around 1500. It was formerly the town hall, but now houses the Museum.

Day 3: Full day out – We board a Steam train in Paignton - through the Devon countryside to the village of Kingswear on the east bank of the River Dart. Here we board a ferry for the short trip across the river to Dartmouth and from here we enjoy cruise up the River Dart and back to Dartmouth. We re-join the coach in Dartmouth and return to our hotel.

Day 4: We leave for home after a last, hearty ‘Coppice’ breakfast.

Price includes 3 nights D/B/B plus travel and trips out as shown. Single room supplement £23
