A seducing trip which harks back to an age of a well-heeled society and imbues the very essence of an English county with fine Manor houses, private Castles and deep pockets…
Day 1: We arrive at Whitworth Hall Hotel this afternoon for 4 nights.
Day 2: We visit Durham Cathedral for an informative guided tour of this fascinating building, followed by lots of free time to look around the city and perhaps get some lunch before we move on to Crook Hall and Gardens, a Medieval manor house built circa 1217, and one of the oldest inhabited houses in Durham City. Home to the Bell family since 1995, the Medieval hall merges into a Jacobean manor house, which in turn merges into a Georgian town house.
Day 3: Today we see Raby Castle - privately owned by Lord Barnard. Everything you want from a castle – impressive outside and with lovely interior rooms with the feel of a family home rather than a “museum”.
Next, The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle. Fabulous art collection with strong connections to the late Queen Mother’s family (Bowes family). Well-loved by visitors is the charming mechanical Swan. Look out for its 2pm performance!
Day 4: Trip to Hartlepool Maritime Experience (includes the oldest British warship still afloat - HMS Trincomalee), a fascinating place leaving you informed, bemused and impressed!
Day 5: Time to bid farewell to the Deer and Durham and head for home.
Price includes: 4 nights D/B/B and excursions as described including any associated entrance fees. Single room supplement £80
