7-day holiday to the romantic and scenic Rhine Valley
A special trip to a beautiful part of Germany, complete with a river cruise, wine-tasting and a train ride through a volcanic landscape
Day 1: Join our coach, and your friendly driver will take you to Kent, where we will be staying overnight in a pleasant hotel not far from the Eurotunnel so we can take an early train tomorrow and be fresh for our trip into Germany.
Day 2: Sees us continue our journey by taking the Eurotunnel to Calais and then on through France and Belgium and into Germany, arriving at our hotel in Boppard – the lovely Hotel Ebertor – in the late afternoon. There will be time to relax and explore the hotel before dinner.
Day 3: After breakfast, in order to help us get our bearings, the owner of our hotel, Vera, will take us on an informative 1½ hour walking tour of Boppard, a pretty town on the edge of the River Rhine and a UNESCO world heritage site.
Enjoy the afternoon in Boppard to explore further, shop for souvenirs or relax with a drink in a pavement café.
Then this evening, after dinner, enjoy an hour’s wine-tasting with local grower Thomas Perll, who will tell us all about the local wines of Boppard.
Day 4: This morning you’ll enjoy a relaxing cruise on the Rhine from Boppard to Loreley – an impressive and imposing slate cliff towering above the narrowest point of the river. Other wonderful sights include Schönburg Castle at Oberwesel, Pfalz Castle standing in midstream near Kaub, and the romantic wine village of Bacharach with Stahleck Castle.
This afternoon we visit Rüdesheim, another famous town in the Rhine Valley. Look out for the famous Drosselgasse Lane - lined with shops, taverns and restaurants. Other points of note here are Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet - a fascinating museum of automated musical instruments, or you may wish to take the chairlift over the vineyards to the Neiderwald monument for spectacular views over the Rhine.
To finish off our day we pay a visit to the Ashbach Brandy distillery.
Day 5: Our final day in the Rhine Valley sees us take a ride on the Vulkan Express from Brohl to Engeln. This slow-moving train (despite the name) will take us on a scenic hour-and-a-half journey past volcanic rock formations, fairytale castles and the beautiful Laacher See, a lake formed millions of years ago by a volcanic eruption.
Later, back in the resort, you’ll have time at leisure.
Day 6: After a final breakfast we set off for home, bidding auf wiedersehen to Germany as we head into Belgium where we stay overnight.
Day 7: Back to Calais and Eurotunnel to Folkestone and home.
